EXPLANATION When we are speaking, we are able to use our voice to emphasise particular words. If we are writing by hand, we can stress words only by underlining them or somehow making them look different from the rest of the text, e.g. printing them. On word processors, the common way to emphasise a word is to use italics:

Young children who can’t swim should never be left unattended near a swimming pool.

Emphasis techniques should be used very sparingly. Overuse of emphasis defeats the purpose of emphasising special words in the first place.
