10.7Would of instead of would have
TYPICAL ERROR We would of gone to watch the game if it had not been raining.
CORRECTION We would've (or would have) gone to watch the game if it had not been raining.

EXPLANATION Another way of writing and saying would have is to contract it to would’ve. When spoken, would’ve sounds a little like would of so it is not uncommon for people fall into the trap of using would of (which is, of course, incorrect).

The same mis-hearing can happen with could've, should've and must've. Obviously, could of, should of and must of are incorrect.

The same logic applies when 'not' is inserted into a sentence. A sentence such as It would not have been the same without you can be contracted to It wouldn't've been the same without you - NOT It wouldn't of been the same without you. (Note that contractions such as wouldn't've are fine when we are speaking but when we are writing, it is better to write the words in full.)

Correct these sentences.
aWe would gone to his concert if tickets had not been so expensive.
bWe would played tennis if a court had been free.
cSophie could come surfing with us.
dIf we could we would have.
eI should studied more.
fThey must been delayed.
Success!
